Smart Export Guarantee (SEG)

What is the Smart Export Guarantee?

The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) is the way the government have adopted to pay people who generate renewable energy, for the electricity they export back to the National Grid. It applies to anyone installing one of the following renewable energy technologies:

  • solar PV panels,
  • domestic wind turbine
  • hydro
  • anaerobic digestion
  • micro combined heat and power

This used to be managed by the Feed-in Tariff scheme which was closed to new applicants back in March 2019, This would provide the generator for an amount per kWh produced.  However, the government recognises that people who generate electricity which is exported back to the National Grid should be paid for that electricity as they have produced it. To ensure this still happens,  The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) has is introduced the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG). The SEG came into force on 1st January 2020.

Under the scheme, all licenced energy suppliers with 150,000 or more customers must provide at least one Smart Export Guarantee tariff which means your electricity supplier is responsible for ensuring you get what is owed to you by way of the SEG.

If you already receive a Feed-in Tariff on your installation, this will be unaffected by the launch of the Smart Export Guarantee.

Which renewable energy installations are eligible for SEG?

The following renewable energy installations are eligible for the smart export guarantee:

  • Solar PV systems, onshore wind, anaerobic digestion, hydro – up to 5MW
  • Micro-combined heat and power – with an electrical capacity of up to 50kW

Any typical domestic system would be well within these size limits.

The technology and installer used by householders must be certified under the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) or equivalent. We are a Certified MCS installer. For more information on that, please click on the MCS logo below.

Solar PV by Norfolk Solar

Welcome to Norfolk Solar, the premier provider of solar PV, solar thermal and electric vehicle charging points in Norfolk.

Solar PV is the greenest way to provide heating and lighting to your home. Solar panels use photovoltaic cells to convert the sun's rays into a direct current of electricity which can be used to power anything requiring electricity in your home. You are then paid for anything you do not use as it is fed back to the grid.

As of 1st January 2020, this payment is made via the Smart Export Guarantee through your electricity provider so your system actually pays you.

Solar Thermal by Norfolk Solar

You may have become a little more conscious about turning on your heating or hot water as you become more conscious of the impact our fosil fuel use has on the environment, not to mention the constantly rising cost of fuel.

Whilst being more economic with your heating use is one thing, improving your conventional heating system will go much further in saving you money and the planet.

Solar thermal uses the free and renewable energy of the sun to heat your water. A solar thermal system cannot fully replace your boiler or immersion heater, but it drastically reduces their use – by at least 65% according to some manufacturers.
